Dental crown

When should a tooth be crowned?

Crowning a tooth is recommended in the following cases:

  • Very little of the natural tooth crown remains or the tooth has a very large filling.
  • Practically only the root of the tooth remains.
  • The tooth is severely discoloured and whitening procedures have not helped.

What should you consider with a crowned tooth?

  • With a tooth that has a living nerve, there is a risk that the tooth will remain sensitive after grinding.

Treatment: the crown is fixed with a temporary cement that also soothes the tooth. If the tooth is still very sensitive or painful, root canal treatment is carried out, and only after that is the crown fixed with permanent cement some time later.

  • Bacteria tend to collect under the edges of the crown and cause caries.

Treatment: correct crown margins and smooth transitions from the crown to the tooth are easy to clean. With today’s precise methods, this problem is extremely rare. When caring for teeth with crowns every day, in addition to normal brushing the patient should use dental floss and mouthwash, and we also recommend the Philips air-floss device. In addition, an Air-Flow cleaning once a year.

  • A tooth under an artificial crown lasts around ten years.

Explanation: this varies greatly between root-canal-treated teeth and teeth with a living nerve. A root-canal-treated tooth becomes more brittle over the years anyway, so there is a risk of the crown breaking. However, if the tooth is not crowned, there is a greater risk that a tooth with a large filling will break within a few years.

A tooth with a living nerve and healthy metabolism does not break easily. More likely, a new crown will be needed if the gum line changes for some reason and a gap forms between the crown and the gum, which damages the tooth neck or does not look nice.

  • A chip breaks off the crown’s ceramic.

Explanation: this is extremely rare. Contact the dentist who made the crown.
