What should you consider when getting a plate denture?

• Cheaper.
• Restores all or most of the teeth.
• Unfortunately, it puts stress on the gums and jawbone.
• When the palate is covered by the denture, the sense of taste, temperature and texture of food is affected. Eating fish can be risky, as bones cannot be felt.
• High risk of breaking, and of cracking or shattering if dropped.

When is a cast partial denture needed? What should you consider and what can you expect?

• A cast partial denture on a metal framework is stronger and more reliable.

  smaller, which lets you feel your palate and the area behind the lower front teeth, and it is more comfortable to use.

• As the denture rests on the teeth with supporting clasps, there is less pressure on the gums and jawbone.
• More expensive than a plate denture.
• More hygienic and easier to care for.

When is a combined denture needed?

A combined denture is comfortable to use, as the attachments are discreetly built into the crowns as precision locks. The denture itself is a cast partial denture.

• Requires very thorough regular maintenance.

What should you consider with all removable dentures?

• By its nature, a denture is still a foreign body.
• Patients adapt very differently, even to the best-made dentures. It takes at least 2 weeks.
• A new denture may need adjusting if it rubs against the gums.
• Regular check-ups and relining of the denture base are important.
• Dentures must always sit firmly in the mouth. Any movement or loosening needs immediate attention from the dentist.
• Hygiene and care of the denture with the special products intended for it, available from pharmacies, are again very important.
